The Skagit Valley Family YMCA has partnered with the American Red Cross to provide Lifeguarding courses at the Y.  You can find more information about these classes at the American Red Cross website.

Do you want to be a lifeguard but don’t want to pay for the training?  Email [email protected] to see what shifts we are hiring for…we may pay for your training and give you a job!

You do not need to be a member of the Y to register for these classes.

American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certification - Blended Learning

The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course is to provide participants with the knowledge and skills needed to:

  • Prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies in both shallow water (less than 7 feet) and deeper water (7 feet or more).
  • Provide professional-level care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) professionals take over.

Prerequisites:
To enroll in the Lifeguarding course, you must be at least 15 years old before the last scheduled class session. To participate in the course, you must be able to pass a prerequisite swimming skills evaluation, which includes two parts and takes place during the first in-person session.

  • Prerequisite 1: Jump in, submerge, resurface and swim 150 yards continuously, tread water for 2 minutes, and then swim 50 more yards. While swimming, you must keep your face in the water and demonstrate good breath control. You may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. Swimming on the back or side is not permitted. Swim goggles are allowed. When treading, you must use only your legs.
  • Prerequisite 2: Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds. Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. Your face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed. Surface dive (head-first or feet-first) to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object. Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on your back to return to the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping your face at or near the surface. Swimming the distance underwater is not permitted. Exit the water without using a ladder or the steps.

Participants who successfully complete the Lifeguarding course will be issued the following American Red Cross certificate: Lifeguarding (Including Deep Water) with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid that is valid for 2 years.

In-Person Class Times:
Friday 6:00-9:30pm
Saturday & Sunday 9am – 7pm

This course follows a blended learning model, which combines online coursework with in-person
sessions. Within 24 hours of registration, you will receive an email from your instructor with instructions for accessing the online course content. Online content must be completed prior to the first in-person session. Proof of online completion will be required.

Refund Policy:
Refunds will not be given to students who do not complete or fail to bring proof of completion for the online work prior to the start of class on Friday. Refunds will also not be given to students who are unable to pass the required swimming pre-requisites. American Red Cross Lifeguarding Recertification - Blended Learning

The primary purpose of a recertification course is to give participants who are currently certified
American Red Cross Lifeguarding (Including Deep Water) the opportunity to review the course
knowledge and skills within a formal course setting to maintain their American Red Cross Lifeguarding (including Deep Water) certification. This course is set up in a blended learning format, that utilizes both online content and classroom/pool time.

Pre-requisites
To participate in the Lifeguarding (Including Deep Water) Recertification course, participants must be at least 15 years of age and hold a current certification, or expired by no more than 30 days, in American Red Cross Lifeguarding that included training in deep water 7 feet or deeper. Participants will have to complete the Course Prerequisites at the start of the class:

  1. Jump into water, totally submerge. Resurface and swim 150 yards. Maintain position at the surface of the water by treading using only legs. Swim 50 yards. Swimming must be front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both. Swimming on the back or side is not permitted. Swim goggles are allowed.
  2. Timed Event (1 minute and 40 seconds limit): Starting in the water, swim 20 yards (face may be in or out of water, swim goggles are NOT allowed). Submerge to a depth of 7-10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object. Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping the face out at or near the surface. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive an American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding (Including Deep Water) with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid, valid for two years.
